1. Gather All Documents

W-2s for each job held in the previous year for each person in the household, this form comes directly from your employer and includes your name, wages, and other tax information to the IRS 1099s showing other income (unemployment, social security, school loans, health care reimbursement, state tax refund, gambling winnings, contract work) that is reported to the IRS 1098s showing payments you've made (school loans, property tax) Statements for income/interest received for any savings account/investments Bank account numbers for automatic deposit of refund Previous year's tax return

2. Information on household members

List the name and taxpayer Social Security number or the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for:

  • Yourself
  • Your Dependents (children or elderly relatives if you provide their care)
  • Date of birth and relationship of each person
  • Current address

3. Additional items needed for a larger refund

  • Childcare Providers - include their name, address, Tax ID or Social Security Number
  • Self-employed or small business - expenses and assets
  • Higher Education - loans, scholarships, bills received (Forms 1098-T/1098-E)
  • Teacher - expenses grades K-12 (classroom supplies and materials)
  • Charities - donations list including amounts, receipts
  • Vehicles - sales tax, personal property tax statement, yearly mileage or mileage record for business miles
  • Renter - amount of rent paid (in some states)
  • Homeowner - (Form 1098) mortgage interest statement, real estate taxes paid, Statement of Property Tax Payable for the year
  • Retirement/IRA - contributions to an IRA and total value as of the last day of the year
